Running to Lose Weight and the Snowball Effect

Using running to lose weight can be compared to a snowball rolling down a hill. Stick with me on this one because it’s not as crazy as it sounds!

Imagine a snowball at the top of a hill. It starts off small in size and it slowly begins to roll. It then picks up more and more snow, gets bigger in size, and moves faster and faster.

The further it moves down the hill the bigger it gets and the faster it becomes. By the time the snowball reaches the bottom it’s become a huge ball of snow which moves at a tremendous speed.

What’s this got to do with using running to lose weight?

Well you are the snowball and the bottom of the hill is your desired weight.

You start off running and it feels really difficult. You can’t run far, you can’t run fast, and it can sometimes feel more like hard work than fun.

However, as time progresses your running improves and you start losing weight. Your running ability then keeps getting better and better and you keep losing more and more weight.

You’ve become involved in a cycle, except that now it’s not the downward spiral of gaining weight that you may have known in the past. This time it’s different!

Now you’re in the positive cycle of improving your fitness and running ability, improving your health and body, and losing weight.

Your improved running ability benefits your weight loss because you gain the ability to burn more and more calories…

And your improved weight loss benefits your running because you can run further and faster due to not carrying as much weight.

Here’s an example

As an example let’s take a look at how improving your running ability helps you burn more calories and makes it much easier for you to lose weight.

When you first start using running to lose weight you may be able to run for 10 minutes and burn 125 calories.

After a period of time you gain more fitness and gain the ability to run for 30 minutes, plus you can run at a quicker speed over these 30 minutes.

You are now running for three times as long as before (30 minutes rather than 10 minutes), but the increased speed means that you can cover more than three times the distance. Therefore, you end up burning more than three times the number of calories as before.

So instead of burning 125 calories in 10 minutes, by improving your running ability you can now burn 450 calories in 30 minutes. You have increased the time you can run by three fold but the number of calories you burn has increased by more than three fold.

Like a snowball your momentum builds and your ability to burn calories increases. You go from struggling to burn calories and losing weight to finding the whole weight loss process much easier…

Because if you develop your running ability and burn multiple times the number of calories than what you could when you first started running, then you’re going to find it a lot easier to lose weight.

So going back to the snowball principle and what this means to you.

The further and faster you’re able to run the more weight you’ll lose…

And the more weight you lose the further and faster you’ll run.

That’s why it’s so important for losing weight that you improve your running ability as much as possible, and as quickly as possible, while also doing it safely…

Then you can keep losing weight and keep your snowball rolling on.

    That makes sense to me my goal is to run further and v
    Get fitter but I have not got the confidence to road run so I run with a friend who is slower than me in the local wood I am ready to run further but she not. To be safe we have to run together I want to loose a stone she wNts to loose 2 stone. Hopefully by the to time dark nights draw in we will be up to 5 miles and feeling confident enough to run on the footpaths
