Today I’d like to talk about something which has a major impact on how successful you are with your running and weight loss…
It even affects how successful you are with anything in your life.
It’s also one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in the past and it’s one of the biggest mistakes that I see many, many other people make.
It’s all about "Enjoying the journey"
Most people start out with an aim or goal and this takes up most of their focus.
While it’s good to have this focus, the problem is that they only see the end goal and forget about the VERY important part in between which could take weeks, months, or even years.
The bit in the middle between now and your goal is often seen as the struggle and frustration to get there. It’s the pain in the backside part where most people think things like…
"I’ve just got to slog it out for the next 3 months and then I’ll get what I want"
"Just get my head down, work hard, and hopefully it will all pay off"
I’ve done this many times myself in the past where I’ve only focussed on my goal. It also felt like I needed to sacrifice parts of my life and like everything had to be a struggle if I was to ever get what I wanted.
And you know what?
This was very, very frustrating!
Many people do exactly the same thing. They make everything much harder and much more frustrating than it needs to be. Maybe you’ve felt this as well?
We all want to experience our hopes and dreams as quickly as possible which is why it can be so frustrating to feel like they’re too far away and that the results we are getting are just too slow and not good enough.
In the meantime we think things like…
"When I reach my goal THEN I’ll be able to do what I want"
"When I reach my goal THEN I’ll be able to do all these things"
"When I reach my goal THEN I’ll feel happier"
But here’s something to think about…
How many times have you really wanted something because it would make such a big difference to your life, but when you got there it just didn’t feel as good as you expected?
The reality is that very often the journey is much more satisfying and rewarding than what you get at the end.
The journey is where you learn the most and grow as a person. It’s where you have lots of valuable experiences that stay with you for the rest of your life.
To experience these benefits though you need to let the journey be rewarding rather than full of frustration.
You need to allow yourself to enjoy the journey!
This is harder than it sounds because it’s like we are programmed to feel like we have to struggle to get anything we want.
What it takes is a shift in mindset by realising that you have a choice of whether you enjoy the journey or make it a frustrating one.
By choosing to enjoy the journey you not only feel a whole lot better and more relaxed but you also get quicker and better results. We always do better when doing something we enjoy.
So how do you do this? How do you "enjoy the journey"?
1. Accept your journey
The first thing to do is accept that you are on a journey and accept that it’s a VITAL part of getting the weight loss results you want, and getting the health, fitness, and body you want.
The journey is now, whereas the destination is in the future. Without the journey you never reach the destination.
2. Make a conscious choice right NOW that you are going to enjoy the journey
Decide that you’re not going to feel frustrated or like you’re struggling anymore because you don’t need to feel this way.
This doesn’t mean that everything suddenly becomes easy, but it means that you accept any struggles as part of your journey while you keep learning and enjoying what you’re working towards achieving.
3. Constantly remind yourself to enjoy the journey
When you feel the frustration starting to creep in, which it will from time to time, remember that it’s all part of the process…
Also remember that it’s important for you to keep enjoying the journey to get the best results.
4. Appreciate that the journey may take longer than you expect
Most people hugely overestimate how quickly they’re going to get results, no matter what they want to achieve. That’s one of the main reasons why they experience so much frustration and end up quitting far too early.
When you enjoy the journey it’s much easier to accept if your goal is taking longer than you wanted. Therefore, you’ll also find it a lot easier to keep going and keep moving forwards.
Just to finish
There’s an old Chinese proverb that says "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step".
I would like to add to that… "and it continues with many steps along the way".
Each run that you do is taken one step at a time, and each run moves you another step closer to the weight, health, fitness, and body that you want.
Keep getting out there running and day by day you are just getting closer and closer to your destination.
Just remember to enjoy the journey along the way!
